We all know our birds can stir up quite a mess when they are feeling spirited. It happens by accident, too! So, how do we keep bedding out of their water?
When we got our rescue chicken, which was our first, that’s one of the immediate questions I had. Day 1 and there were shavings in the water. I wanted to be a good chicken momma, and clean water seemed like the least I could do!
There are a few things you can do to minimize or even eliminate the debris that ends up in water dishes:
- Build a slightly raised platform and place water in the middle of it. 2×4’s and plywood should do the trick. The flock will hop on up.
- Use a hanging water feeder. Just make sure it is hanging low enough!
- Fashion a stand specifically for the water dish itself. Make it just high enough so the dish isn’t on ground, but the flock can still drink as they please.
However you choose to set up the flock water source, always remember that YOU are the best coop solution! A few reminders for you:
*Take a quick check for clean water when gathering eggs
*Change the water when necessary
*Clean the dish itself every few days
A couple of minutes of your time will keep their water clean and your feathered besties will appreciate that. See friends, just a few minutes of coop maintenance and you’ll be the chicken tender hero!
