Chickens lay eggs. Roosters crow. Well known facts about yardbirds. And growing up, that’s about as much as I knew about chickens. And THAT’S a fact! However, I have learned so much more cool stuff about our feathered besties.
First of all, did you know…
THEY ARE TECHNICALLY TINY DINOSAURS?! I knoooow! How cool is that tidbit? They are the closest living creature to the great and mighty T-rex. I have tiny dinos in my backyard. That’s a fun sentence to say out loud! My next rooster shall be named Rex.
Another fact about chickens? (This one actually makes me a little jealous.) They have a sleep phase we humans lack. In this sleep phase, a chicken’s brain is literally half awake and half asleep! They can sleep with one eye open and see everything they need to, while the other half of their brain rests. Don’t you think that would be handy with your children or grandchildren? Or handy with spouses being sneaky and taking the last Oreo, which only happens to be your favorite cookie?
Here’s another astounding fact for you; there are over 25 billion chickens in the world. Yes, twenty-five billion. Friends, they outnumber humans 4 to 1! Can you imagine a miniature Jurassic Park uprising? We would be in some trouble! Hmmmm, maybe backyard tenders would be ok since we are good to our flocks.
There is so much more to our chickens than eggs and crowing. My coop being full of tiny dinos, is my favorite piece of trivia! But, there is still so much to learn about them. Check out this article for more interesting and fun chicken facts. I bet you find some surprising trivia, too!
